Welcome to "My Life: The After School Special!"

When I was growing up, I remember watching the after school specials that came on for latch-key kids like me.  Just say no to drugs, don't drink and drive, making fun of others isn't nice, etc.  Those are the kinds of lessons presented that backed up what my parents were teaching me on a daily basis in both word and deed.

Most of the time I listened.  I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I got relatively good grades in school, I like to finish what I start. But wisdom in essential adult issues like love and relationships...let's just say I was clueless.

Decisions I've made in those areas have taken my life on more than a few traumatic turns.  In high school I rarely dated (read:  never).  In college, I almost got raped when I was just supposed to be studying, and I got my heart broken more than I'd like to recall.  Then I became the heartbreaker, and brothers became innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of my own baggage, both in college and my military career.

Can you hear Erykah Badu's anthem?  *Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go.*

You would think somewhere along the way I'd learn some kind of lesson.  I have gained much insight on love and relationships, but it has all come the hard way.  Concussions from banging my head against the walls of not knowing my inherent worth have made me vulnerable.  The lowest of low blows came when a failed marriage doggone near rendered me comatose.

This blog is your invitation to either solidify or learn life principles.  It is also your open offer to share your wisdom and perspective with other readers so they don't have to learn the way I did--the hard way.

Welcome to my life:  the after school special (My-Life)!  Thanks for sitting a spell!

My-Life, what kinds of lessons have you learned the hard way, and how did you manage to overcome and learn from them?
